Pier plan welcomed

THE National Piers Society has come out in favour of a controversial scheme for seafront buildings.

Developer St Modwen is applying to build two shoreline buildings on either side of the West Pier in Brighton.

They would provide cash to make redevelopment of the Grade I listed pier a viable proposition.

Tim Mickleburgh, chairman of the society, said the West Pier was a structure of national importance.

He said there must be doubts about how many storms it could survive before sections collapsed.

"That is why the new shore-end proposals must be accepted," he said.
