Apparently work on the i360 site is due to start shortly with the tower being open to the public in 2010 now.

The pod, with a capacity for 125 people, will be more than nine times the size of a London Eye capsule. The operator I-Xperience hopes it will become a wedding venue.

Construction is due to start early in 2007, with completion by summer 2008.

The project will be funded by private investors.

So when are you going to start work on this ?????????????

I was a friend of Alex Doughty - one of a group of 6 -8 people given permission by Jack Tarling,General Manager of AVP - owners of the Pier at the time - to fish the pier in exchange for "night-watching duty" -a privilege we had for some number of years. The group included Frank Thompson, Dave Croak, Vic Curd, Lionel Webb, Jack(Jock)Ferguson. After the pier was declared unsafe we had the use of one of the Arches and fished weekends for many years - It is immoral that so much neglect was allowed to happen to both the Pier and Regency Square during the 60`s. The pier should now be totally removed and we should be left with our memories as to see it in it`s present state is heartbreaking.

Hi, I live in Australia and I not long ago went to England and saw the West Pier I was really shocked that they didn't get rebuilt it for over 30 years.
I was also shocked that it was set it on fire on purpose In 2003 28th of March.
So yeah thats pretty much it. BYE!

My father Alex Doughty used to fish on the pier with of his friends for many years and after the pier had closed, he was a watchman at weekends. I think he was a member of a group to save the pier. I have just been going through some old photos of him and his friends on the pier, one with the pier master Jack Taylor.

Let it crumble with dignity! why are we so desprate to preserve something that clearly beyond saving?

I visited Brighton on Saturday, and saw the state of the west pier, so I looked up on the internet about any possible redevelopment plans. And I saw the i360 replacement and I thought this looks good, but I think that the west pier should be restored to the design of its 1930's heyday as it is an icon of Britain and makes me so sad to see it fall apart especially when it is supposed to be a grade 1 listed building!.
I approve of the i360 but I think this should be part of a new pier in the same old design. That pier made many people feel warm inside so I think it deserves a chance to be mighty again.

PS i would love the pier to be restored to it's original state and I am deeply dismayed that it was left to ruin and fire. Maybe a club or fundraising committe could be started to aid this.

My Grandfather or greatgrandfather used to be the amusement manager at Brighton, I have found a pass for his family and a picture (black and white) of the big ferris wheel that apparently was there. I am of the understanding that this was moved to Russia at some point and was also seen in a James Bond film (live and let die I think)can anyone confirm this or help with my investigations.
Also I cannot find any other pictures of this ferris wheel at brighton.
