Knole: We haven't been to Knole for a while so I thought we may all like a return visit. Although Knole is relatively close it is an early start as we have a Premium Guided Tour of the house before it is open to the hoi pulloi. This does however mean we have to be there by 11.00am. Having had the guided tour in the morning we are entitled to visit the private gardens of Lord Sackville in the afternoon, there is an additional fee for this of £2.00 per person, which if you want to take the tour must be paid when you make the booking.
Set at the heart of a timeless deer park, Knole has fascinating links with kings, queens and the nobility as well as literary connections with the novelists Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf. Knole was the birthplace and childhood home of Vita Sackville-West and members of the Sackville family continue to live at Knole today. Thirteen superb state rooms are laid out much as they were in the 18th century, to impress visitors with the wealth and standing of the Sackville family (who still live at Knole today). The house boasts a world-renowned collection of Royal Stuart furniture, paintings by Gainsborough, Van Dyck and Reynolds, as well as important 17th-century tapestries. The 404-hectare (1,000-acre) deer park surrounding the house is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Lord Sackville's Private Gardens will be open on the day we are going, there is an additional charge for this of £2.00 per person. There is a Rose Garden, a herb garden and a bog garden, but it is claimed that the best reason for visiting the private garden is the exceptional view of the house obtained from there.
